- - DON'T TELL ME OUR YOUTH IS RUNNING OUT - - - - Jack pulled his dark gray hoodie over his red flannel shirt. When he went out on the weekends awake he didn’t understand how to dress for the weather. During the work week he dressed in layers upon layers. He didn’t want to risk even a drop of the frigid air to touch his torso. He wanted to be comfortable on his way to school. He wanted to prolong the comfort of warmth as he drove through the town. It was at that time he felt like he was one of very few people awake. It was a strange feeling. It wasn’t important though. At the moment though, it was Saturday and he didn’t have to go into the school. Thank God.
His eyes glanced over his body. Whatever, he just needed to go. He never put this much time into an outfit. It was usually just get out of the house ASAP. Clothes were easy. He’d been dressing himself for parties and outings since he was seven. There was rarely an occasion where his mother had to march him back to his room to change. He was good at it. It was the weather that he wasn’t very good with. He sighed. Jeans weren’t good with cold weather, he’d deal. He was walking his dog for heaven’s sake. Surely he’d be able to create his own body heat from walking.
Nautic, his black Labrador, was lying on his bed watching Jack skeptically. Sometimes Jack completely agreed with his dog’s expression. He didn’t need to put this much thought into his outfit. He was walking his best friend who wouldn’t judge him ever. Then again Jack thought that the only reason Nautic put up with him was for a tummy rub and some dog food. That could never be, he’d love Jack no matter what. He’d had him for a few years. Nautic had even forgiven Jack for the numerous times he’d left him at daddy Richard’s house while Jack was out of town.
This was good enough. He put on some shoes and left his room walking towards the front door to his apartment. ”You coming Nautic?” he called over his shoulder. He heard the black dog land on the floor and run after him. Jack grinned at his dog’s excited face. ”Wanna go on a walk?” he asked, squatting down next to his dog to put the leash on. The dog’s tail hit the wall in an excited rhythmic pattern as Jack stood up. He grabbed his keys and exited his apartment. After a struggle Jack locked his door and started walking towards the park.
What a spazz, Jack thought as his dog zig-zagged along the sidewalk. The dark haired man grinned watching what was essentially his baby explore the world. Jack loved how even though they took this walk a lot, Nautic was still excited about every tree and fence post That sort of excitement never got old. He tried using that sort of excitement in his lessons, but working with high schoolers was like herding feral cats, you didn’t. He wished his kids could see how amazing history was, but they don’t. He could only hope that they would find their own passions in life.
He was pulled out of his thoughts by the leash that was suddenly holding him from moving forward. Jack furrowed his brows and looked back at his dog. He smirked watching Nautic greed another doggy companion. He shifted his gaze up to the shorter dog's owner. "Sometimes I wished he'd worn someone before he'd stop suddenly." he smirked, looking back down at his innocently looking black puppy.

Today felt like a rather lazy day for her today. She walked around her small apartment in shorts and a baggy t-shirt, just tiddying up around the place. She watched the small coorgi puppy sit down in front of the door, wagging its tail, and looking back at Cassie then looking back at the door. Cassie scratched the back of her head and decided that it had been awhile since she had taken Yoshi out for a walk. She bent down and began to pet her puppy, saying that they would go out shortly. Cassie went to take a shower, it was always a good idea to get clean before she went out, no matter what or where she went out. It was a good thing she didn't take long to shower, it was already almost lunch time in her eyes, and stomach. She quickly wrapped a towel around her body and put some ramen in the microwave to heat up while she got dressed.
She just quickly threw something on and put her hair up in the towel and went to eat the ramen. Cassie sat down at the table and Yoshi came over and popped a squat right next to her feet, waiting to get out of the apartment. After she devoured the ramen, she unwrapped her hair and hung the towel back up in the bathroom, put her hair up in a ponytail, and put some shoes on. She put on her black jacket and grabbed the leash to take Yoshi out for a walk. However, the small dog had disappeared. Cassie yelled around her apartment, which it shouldn't be hard to find him since her apartment was tiny. It was becoming quite a mystery for where ever the tiny coogi went; which she was getting slightly annoyed of it. "I'm going to leave without you," she yelled. There was a slight barking noise coming from her room.
Making the way to her room, she found Yoshi up on her bed. Cassie did a double take to make sure that she wasn't going crazy and went and sat down on her bed, beginning to pet her puppy. She had no idea how the small dog had even remotely gotten up on her bed, but she wasn't going to question it. She put the leash on him and set him down on the floor, then grabbing her keys and finally walked out of the apartment. The small dog always stayed either right beside her or just a bit in front of her. This time, Yoshi was right beside her; trotting, sniffing everyone that the two passed. Every time that the dog stopped to sniff someone, Cassie tried to make small conversation with the person, apologizing for her dog's tendancy to be nosey.
It was weird all of a sudden, her small dog rushed in front of her, catching up with another dog. The other dog was quite bigger than her's, looked like a lab. She smirked when the two dogs began to sniff and greet one another. The dog's owner started to speak and she looked up at him. "Well, I'm not sure how a dog would worn you about stopping," she mentioned. Cassie looked down at the two dogs and she was slightly afraid that the lab was going to snack on her dog, "I hope that your dog doesn't accidentally step on my dog." She smiled, just joking around, "I'm Cassadee, by the way." She had almost completely forgotten to introduce herself to the man. She could have sworn that she had known him from somewhere. Maybe they went to high school together or something like that.

- - DON'T TELL ME OUR YOUTH IS RUNNING OUT - - - - Jack grinned at her comment. ”Perhaps that is the case, or perhaps we underestimate our companion’s intelligence.” It was a dumb argument, but sometimes he thought Nautic was a lot smarter than Jack gave him credit for. Well, his dog wasn’t the smartest dog that had ever lived. He was pretty sure his puppy was pretty average as dogs went. He was an extraordinary swimmer, fetcher, and eater. His dog might have been too good of an eater actually, which is where his average intelligence kicked in. Jack had lost count of the amount of times he’d stopped his dog from scarfing down week old dead squirrel in the park. Then again you couldn’t always blame intelligence for that. It was natural for him to eat something so disgusting. The good part was he never had to see the animal after Nautic had eaten it. He never threw it back up, lucky.
”I can’t make any promises, but Nautic is pretty good with his manners, so I think your dog is safe.” he said glancing down at his dog. Not to say that it wouldn’t be funny if Nautic did accidentally land one of his paws on the smaller dog. He hoped his dog would manage to keep all his paws off of the smaller dog. That wouldn’t make a very good impression of him on this woman, especially when he would have started to laugh in disbelief at that situation. Yeah, it really would be best if Nautic didn’t do something silly like that. She’d probably label Jack an asshole if that was the case, but maybe she should have gotten a taller dog.
He smiled, ”Jack.” Jackson sounded formal and reminded him of getting into trouble with his dad and his grandmother. He’d been pretty popular in high school, probably not for the right reasons. He was friends with the upper class kids, but he was also friends with the people who did a whole bunch of shit they shouldn’t have. He used to get into fights, and he probably wasn’t the best human being in high school. He really just wanted to fit in with a group of kids that his father wouldn’t approve of. It was stupid and a little reckless, but he had fun. His father couldn’t complain though. Jack kept his grades up and managed to sneak out of his bedroom window. It wouldn’t have mattered anyway, his father was too shit faced to notice when he snuck back in. Then there were the one night stands, he was such a dick back then.
”Do you walk the park often, Ms. Cassaddee?” he asked, wondering if he’d need to start being more observant with his surroundings. She was pretty, not that he really dated anymore. He was still heartbroken over the child he never got to see born. Why couldn’t she have just talked to him before? He could have convinced her to keep it. It was over with now; there was nothing he could do about it now. He just needed to get over it before it started to eat him inside. ”Because I can’t say that I’ve ever recalled seeing your face around this park before.”

This guy was slightly on the funny side, with the comment on the dogs and not giving them enough credit as companions. Cassie knew that Yoshi could be sort of, well, out there in the mind spectrum, but he could be smart when he really put forth the effort to. "Well, we might never know if we don't give them the chance." She shrugged though, trying to play it off. She thought dogs could be brought up to be quite intelligent if a person would give them the time of the day. You could train them, and teach them to do tricks, right? There were dog shows, but then again, she knew not a lot of the dog world. Cassie did know for a fact that dogs were very good at swimming though. When she was tiny, her old dog saved her from drowning. That's kind of why she got a dog and never got back into a pool again. Sure, she sits by the side and catches what little rays of sun she does, but still.
The girl wasn't really worried about Yoshi though; she was honestly joking around more than being serious. And she just then caught the name of his dog; Nautic. What a strange name, but then again, her dog's name was Yoshi. "That's an interesting name for your dog. Where did you come up with it?" She was generally interested in it too; even if it would be an hour story. However, he didn't seem like the type to go on and on about some story like that. Even if the bigger dog where to start tossing Yoshi around like a small toy, she'd probably just giggle about it. Yoshi was a puppy, but he could hold his own. Besides, she should expect the young dog to take a little more roughening up since he was so small and tiny.
His name was Jack. She slyly looked him over; he seemed like a Jack. Well, or better words, it just seemed to fit him. "Well then, nice to meet you Jack." She looked down at the large lab, "And Nautic as well." His dog was quite cute though, she had to admit that much. Seemed like a good companion dog. Yoshi, well, he was small and tiny. He was adorable for sure, but he wouldn't be able to scare anyone away if she needed it to be like that instead. Cassie really wanted a German Shepherd, but when she went out to buy a dog they didn't have any. So, when she got some place bigger, she'd probably get one; already had a name picked out and everything for it. "Oh, and this little guy is Yoshi." She sounded dumb every time she introduced him to someone new though. Almost regretting naming him it.
Asking if she went to the park often, well, that could be a loaded question. She didn't really go often in winter or summer. Those two seasons were the either super hot or freezing cold sides of nature. "Well, not as much as I used to." That seemed like a reasonable answer, yes? Especially if she did not have a definate answer. "Perhaps we've just never been at the park at the same time then. When did you graduate high school? I swear I recognize your face." She hoped that she would be right on this one. He just had one of those faces where it seemed like it would be hard to forget in the very least.

- - DON'T TELL ME OUR YOUTH IS RUNNING OUT - - - - ”Yep! It’s kind of like working with high schoolers. Sometimes they surprise you, but I’d rather work with dogs.” he smirked. Not completely true. He liked working with teenagers. There was the odd student that he didn’t really get along with. He hated debating history with some of those little shits. They always thought they knew more than him, and sure maybe they would at some point in their life. That point wasn’t when they were sitting in his class. He couldn’t count the number of times he’d had to shut them down with a cruel smile and a small “we’ll see what answer will pass the test for you.” It wasn’t the best move, but he didn’t have the best patience with stubborn students. He was very rarely wrong about his subject too. He’d ask his students to prove their points to him and it usually ended up being some stupid post on the internet or some fiction movie. It was frustrating. He probably didn’t handle those situations great, but whatever.
It was a name he’d derived from nautical. It was a little immature too. Nautic sounded cool and Nautical mentioned “seamen” in the definition. It wasn’t like he was going to tell her that though. That was awesome. He was in college when Nautic had joined him. He bit his lip gently. ”Well I like the Titanic.” he said, starting to bullshit some sort of answer. He paused, thinking about it for a moment. He did like the history of the Titanic, so that wasn’t a lie and nautical had something to do with the ocean or ships or something. ”and nautical is a cool word that sort of makes me think of the ocean and ships, but nautical sounds like a cheesy bro phrase, so Nautic.” that sounded legit, right? He was pretty good at bullshitting this sort of thing. Poor dog had the shittiest owner ever.
This walk in the park had taken an interesting turn. ”It’s nice to meet you too, Cassadee,” he said giving her one of his charming smiles. It wasn’t as if he was trying to flirt heavily with her, just a little. She was extremely pretty. It would be a shame if he didn’t flirt a little bit. At least it wasn’t over doing it. That was something he would have done in high school. Jack glanced down at his dog as his name was said. His tail began to wag at the mention. Jack smirked and bent down to pat his dog’s side gently. His eyes shifted to the other dog. ”Yoshi?” He said, raising his eyebrow. It wasn’t a bad name for a dog. He’d much rather people give their dogs strange names than their children. A dog didn’t get teased profusely for their name, a human, on the other hand, did.
High school felt so long ago. It was good though, maybe. It made him feel ancient though. He’d graduated seven years ago. Seven years since he was a bratty little high schooler. Realistically he hadn’t changed all that much. His exterior personality was a whole lot nicer than it used to be. He was still the gender concerned asshole he was in high school. Of course he didn’t treat women as badly as he used to. He no longer used them or had one night stands like he used to. One night stands were overrated. He was more into finding someone to settle down with now. One night stands had led to one of the biggest heartbreaks he’d ever known in his entire life. ”I graduated in 2006.” he smiled sheepishly. He felt ancient. People in this small town usually looked familiar, even if they went to high school together.
note don't worry about the length. quality over quantity.
